Augh. This concept just kills me, especially when I think about how much Katniss missed her right to choose whether or not to marry in the series.

Okay, I just had to say that. Now I will go back to reading.

I'm fascinated by this so far! I take it it's a world-blending of sorts? Taking The Hunger Games and another series and blending their ideas together? If not, sorry.

Also, one little nitpicky note: the expression is actually "hear, hear," not "here, here."

Very interesting concept. Interested to see how you develop the P/K relationship.

Well, I hope you enjoy the rest! :) (The "continue -->" links are to more of this story; LJ length limits split this o/s into four posts!)

Oh em gee. I don't even know where to start. Plainly, I like this idea - stories are always told about people like Madge. Those like this Katniss and this Peeta, who don't buck the system from moment one, who aren't outspoken, those stories get lost. I don't think they are less deserving of the telling, especially when they become stronger for their survival, but they're just less flashy.

And then of course I love that it's Katniss and Peeta and at least Katniss is different enough to be jarring, to make me want MORE, to know more. The way she has collapsed into herself seems so unlike her, but not - as this is the beginning, it's not fair of me to expect the Katniss I grew to love, but at the same time, she is still the same: doing what must be done. I've always liked that about her - she is unafraid. (And yet here, the tiny bit of fear, it's good and makes her more human.)

Can't wait to read more! (Freaking THRILLED that there's another chapter right off!)

Thank you so much!

Yayy, I'm so excited that you picked up on the idea that this is sort of a reversal of THG in that this time, it's Katniss/Peeta who are watching someone else's rebellion unfold, and sort of the "home front experience."

I don't know why, but this line:

“You will both be sharing Compartment C1, of course. We will have to warn the District One transfers to beware the sound of your headboard tonight, won’t we?”

made me shudder. So crude, dark and presumptuous, this Effie is.

I really like this kind of mash-up between elements of Matched and THG, and poor Madge! But I loved her moment when she stood in defiance for that practice. I'm looking forward to whatever awaits Katniss and Peeta in the Capitol.

WHY AM I ALWAYS A FAILURE AT REPLYING TO THINGS.

And yes -- this Effie is DEFINITELY my Dolores Umbridge, heh.

Sorry it's taken me so long to comment; I had to read this like three times before I could offer anything more articulate than "GUH."
You're a complete world building genius, I hope you know. The way you integrate the books, your own ideas and recognizable bits from reality is nothing short of AMAZING. The callbacks to some of the tributes (Clove and District 9 Boy? Awesome. "Grandin Temple?" Even awesomer. My little sister is autistic and nonverbal, so the shout-out to one of our heroes made me smile.) were impressive, the repurposed bits of texts that I caught were very cleverly done, and I particularly liked the rather sinister twisting of that creepy Good Housekeeping article.
Also, aw, Delly and Thresh. Never would have occurred to me in a million years, but I can see that working out in some weird way.

I AM SO EXCITED THAT YOU CAUGHT THAT IT'S THE GOOD HOUSEKEEPING ARTICLE! :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD No one else has mentioned that and it was SO intentional! ♥

And Delly/Thresh -- IKR? Now I want to read a fic of them, lol.

Delly & Thresh, prolly my new favorite ship.
I've only gotten through this first page and I already want a three book trilogy of an alternate Panem where arrange marriages and brainwashing are the norm.

I love how you are able to write in SC voice but make her characters your own. I cannot wait to read the rest of this arc.

Also, do you write original stories? I imagine I would love anything you came up with.

Re: Delly & Thresh, prolly my new favorite ship.
(My response is only 5 months late. Not TOO bad, right? Right? ...No.)

But thank you so much! And yes, I do write original work, but I don't, and probably never would, post it online.

V. 26.

You've got to think about all the things you like and decide whether they're worth sticking around for. And if they are, you'll find a way to do this.

And what if I don’t?

Then you go away, and you don't get to like anything anymore.
